Estonian Life No. 18 2017
Several registered Estonian Charities in Canada met a few times in the Fall of 2016 to share information, investigate possible synergies, potential cooperation and solutions to common issues in the interest of the Estonian community. Participating charities included non profit organizations that are registered Canadian charities: Estonian Foundation of Canada (EFC) / Eesti Sihtkapital Kanadas (ESK), Estonian Studies Center(VEMU), Estonian Relief Committee (Ehatare), Estonian Ecumenical Relief Organization (EERO), Estonian Scouts and Guides in Canada, University of Tartu Fund, The Chair of Estonian Studies and Estonian Art Center (EKK). As registered charities, we have unique requirements to ensure compliance with both CRA regulations and Canadian laws regarding reporting, fund disbursements and governance.
To help members of the Estonian community when considering their options for making a donation or bequest, the following lists registered charities that can issue tax receipts and are legal entities. Please note, some are national and others are registered in Ontario but all of them can issue tax receipts.
On Wednesday May 17th, the Estonian (Toronto) Credit Union is conducting an information session in the Estonian House Cafe at 7pm called Tax efficient strategies from retirement through estate planning. Representatives from these charities will also be on hand to share more information. We hope this session will be of interest and helpful to many of you in the community. We hope to see you there.
