THE FRIENDS OF ESTONIAN HOUSE BELIEVE AND SUPPORT REMAINING AT 958 BROADVIEW AVE. (5)

This is NOT about sentimentality; IT IS however, about common sense and fiscal responsibility. Common sense dictates that the only practical, sensible and responsible choice is to keep this valuable asset and systematically re-develop and revitalize it to be the heart of the Estonian and local Broadview Ave. community.

We view Estonian House from a SUSTAINABLE and ATTAINABLE perspective.

SUSTAINABLE because rental income will increase through proactive marketing of improved/remodeled rental spaces. Presently marketing is non-existent relying only on past repeat renters. The EH Board has instead spent all of its efforts trying to devalue the Estonian House rather than revitalize it.

*Please note much has been made of the fact that Estonian House has a $250,000 debt to ETCU due entirely to money spent for 3 failed condo/development projects. This is not an insurmountable sum, the same or smaller than a loan for buying a house these days. Tartu College also has a sizable debt that is never mentioned.

SUSTAINABLE due to the availability of grants which so far have not been tapped and which other cultural and community centers have been built on.

SUSTAINABLE because recent fundraising events have proven the willingness to give and the generosity of our community and the surrounding neighbourhood to our cause and the individuals associated with it.

ATTAINABLE because we can pull together as a community to revitalize and redevelop the Estonian House property that has been purposefully neglected by the Estonian House Board for well over 10 years in order to fill an alternative self- serving agenda.

We have many architects, builders, engineers, designers and landscapers in our community. We just need to ask for their support, be fiscally responsible and contribute some of the work ourselves, as a means not only to SUSTAIN Estonian House but, in the process create a re-energized, thriving community spirit that lasts from generation to generation.

Friends of Estonian House/ Eesti Maja Sõbrad are supporters of and volunteers for OUR Estonian House at 958 Broadview Ave.

I wish it could be done, but sadly I don't think you know what "fiscal responsibility" means.

It does not mean increased spending on marketing, infrastructure and management paid for by charity, support of the community (and ESK) and government handouts. (The theoretical increased rent revenues would come only after the improvements are paid for)

A non-profit community center beholden to a shrinking community, which never earned enough to set funds aside for capital improvements is a socialist business model destined for failure.

This isn't a mess we can just manage our way out of. Eesti Maja always had a terminal date, and now we risk depleting what value there is left (and draining ESK unnecessarily) with every continued year of losses.

Sorry, but the friends of EM are just a group of well meaning, lovely, sentimentalists attached to a house of cards.
The point everyone seems to miss in these articles is that it is fiscally irresponsible and unsustainable to have TWO Estonian Centres in Central Toronto! period! full stop!!
Good fiscal management will definitely be needed regardless of location, but government grants and rental income will be just as available on Madison as they are on Broadview now.
Lets focus instead on a Major Fundraising and Donation campaign that can start as soon as we come together as ONE.
Please, friends of the Estonian House, I agree with keeping the place nice while we undergo this transition, but to think we will ever sell enough pirukad to upgrade and sustain two major Estonian centres is ridiculous.
Lets end "those of us at EM" and "those others at TC" and think of us ALL as ONE TORONTO ESTONIAN COMMUNITY.

" . . . purposefully neglected" I am still choking on that one. What we needed 50 years ago was a place to 'be Estonians in' while we waited it out for our loved ones back home. Beautiful. I have used the Esto-House Co-op model many times to get a project out of the ground. Today however, that financial equation has changed and we have developed some other needs. 'We' invented SKYPE for crying out loud. We have qualities, talents, intelligence, strength of character, money savvy and the pirukad to share and showcase. We have changed. We ARE ready to ratchet the whole equation up and become 'more cosmopolitain' but I hear there is more parking in Uxbridge.

I applaud your enthusiasm! But haven't we tried it before. It kind of works for a while, but are you still there in five years? I'm afraid that in a few years time you see how futile this struggle is. I do see our older generation wanting to support the renovations right now but they are disappearing fast. The younger generations aren't as generous. Not that they don't want to be but they just do not have the funds. And then... where do we stand then... This huge house falling apart... the current renters forced to move out because they cannot operate their business there... Why not to grab this opportunity to unite our community at one place, to build something where our children can go and bring their friends. Wouldn't it be cool to have a place we can call Eesti plats in Toronto. When we have that then no-one can take this away from us!

The year was 1998 or 1999, when about 20 minutes after a bridge club event dispersed from the väike saal, the ceiling collapsed. And not just one ceiling, but 3 successive ceilings that well-intentione d handymen had nailed up with ever shorter nails over the years. Had the saal not been vacant, death and grevious injury would have been the result. The number of such calamities-in-w aiting start with the heating system which is a set of patchwork repairs held together by spit and hope and which will lead to opening up walls that are riddled with asbestos. The whole house will need to be shut down and evacuated and the funds for those repairs is proposed by the 'stay-at-all-co sts-we'll-go-do wn-with-this-sh ip'...grant monies that have all kinds of conditions attached to them making us beholden to third parties... and passing the hat around to the dwindling community that only pays for use of the house for peied. Then the plumbing systems that are corroded throughout will blow through the basement wall, the electrical systems with again, a well-intentione d handyman left a live wire in the wall that shifted over time and shorted, causing a fire in the manager's office in Ülo Isberg's day, then the roof that doesn't need a new set of shingles, it needs a re-build. Not hundreds of thousands of dollars, this is millions that is hanging like the Sword of Damocles. Tõmbab noka lahti saba jääb kinni, tõmbab saba lahti nokk jääb kinni, tõmbab noka lahti... In other words, this article speaks to a desperate plea that is, contrary to its own protests, all about sentimentality, not about good governance. You can't keep the heart alive when it's encased in a corpse. You need to transplant before the organ donor card expires.
